Houston School of Floral Design was founded in 1980, and is approved and regulated by the Texas Workforce Commission, Division of Career Schools and Colleges Austin, Texas. The school is located at 2000 North Loop West at East T.C. Jester, Suite 130, in the office park complex of "The Preserve". The design studio faces the natural setting of a wooded ravine, and consists of a demonstration area, flower preparation area, individual student design tables, and floral refrigeration equipment.

The director and principal instructor of the school is Pat Hermes. Ms. Hermes, a Texas Master Florist, has been in the floral industry for over thirty years. She owned a retail florist and wedding consulting business before opening Houston School of Floral Design and during this time, also instructed floral design for Rice University's Department of Continuing Studies. She served on the Education Committee of the Texas State Florists' Association for 6 years.

The school operates year-round and offers new classes beginning monthly. The school's office hours coincide with current class schedules. All nationally recognized holidays are observed. Students are requested to attend all classes as scheduled, and on time, as there are no makeup classes offered. Reasonable class decorum is requested of each student. Excessive absences, tardies, or unreasonable class decorum my result in a student being asked to withdraw from class and refunded according to the cancellation and refund policies. There are no written or oral examinations, and no grades are issued. Video cameras are not allowed during classroom instruction.

Program Description: The arrangement session is designed to teach students the basic principles, mechanics and techniques of floral design. Graduates of this program may find employment as a beginner designer in a retail flower shop.

The wedding session is designed to teach students the floral mechanics and techniques to design flowers for weddings. Graduates of this program may find employment as a beginning floral wedding designer in a retail flower shop.

The shop management and sympathy session is designed to teach students how to design flowers and the knowledge required to manage a retail flower shop. Graduates of this program may find entry-level employment as a beginning trainee to manage a retail flower shop.
